*1 カウンティは「県」と訳することもある。ダウン州は北アイルランド（一応イギリスに組み込まれている）の州の一つ。「嵐が丘」や「ジェーン・エア」で有名なブロンテ姉妹のお父さんがダウンの出身なので、「ブロンテ州」という愛称がある。バンブリッジまで行商に行ったときに何故かミルトンの「失楽園」を買ってきたちょっと変わった人。貧しい職人から身を起こしてケンブリッジ大学に入り、牧師になったとても偉い人でもある。
