Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised
in the city of our God,
in the mountain of his holiness.
主は偉大、大いに賛美される。
わたしたちの神の都で、
主の聖なる山で。

Beautiful in elevation,
the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion,
on the sides of the north,
the city of the great King
高く美しい、
シオンの山こそ全地の歓び、*1
北の地にある
大王の都。

God hath made Himself known in her palaces
for a refuge.
神はその宮でおん自らを示される、
我らの避けどころとして。

For, lo, the kings assembled themselves,
they passed by together.
They saw, then were they amazed;
they were dismay'd, they hasted away.
見よ、諸王は相謀（あいはか）り
共に攻め寄せてきた。
しかし彼らはエルサレムを見て、驚愕した。
あわてふためき、逃げ去った。

trembling took hold upon them there,
as that pain, as of a woman in travail.
as with the eastwind that breaketh the ships of Tarshish:
おののきが彼らをとらえた。
それは子を産む女の激痛のよう、
東風に打ち砕かれるタルシシュの船のよう。*2

lo, the kings assembled themselves,
they passed by together.
They saw, then were they amazed;
they were dismay'd, they hasted away.
見よ、諸王は相謀り
共に攻め寄せてきた。
しかし彼らはエルサレムを見て、驚愕した。
あわてふためき、逃げ去った…

As we have heard, so have we seen
in the city of the Lord of hosts,
in the city of our God:
God will establish it for ever.
かねて聞いていたとおりのことをわたしたちは見た、
万軍の主の都で、
わたしたちの神の都で、
神はシオンをとこしえに立てられる。

We have thought of thy loving-kindness, O God,
in the midst of thy temple.
as in thy name, O God,
so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth:
thy right hand is full of righteousness.
わたしたちはあなたの慈しみを想う、ああ神よ
あなたの神殿の中にあって。
あなたのみ名と同じく、ああ神よ
あなたへの賛美も地の果てまで及ぶ。
あなたの右手には正しさが溢れている。

We have thought of thy loving-kindness, O God,
in the midst of thy temple.

Let mount Zion be glad,
let the daughters of Judah rejoice,
because of Thy judgments.
シオンの山よ、喜べ。

主の裁きのゆえに。

walk about Zion, and go round about her,
tell the towers there of.
mark ye well her bulwarks,
consider her palaces,
that ye may tell it to the generation following.
シオンをおとずれ、その周りを巡れ。
塔の数をかぞえ、*4
その城壁に心を留め、
その宮に想いを馳せよ。
そして世々に語り伝えよ。

For this God is our God
for ever and ever:
He will be our guide
even unto death. Amen.
この神こそわたしたちの神、
とこしえに限りなく。
わたしたちの導き手、
死へ向かうときさえも。アーメン。

*1 シオンはエルサレムにある丘。王家の城や墓があり、エルサレムの象徴、愛称になった。
*2 タルシシュは古代に栄えた交易都市。列王記10:22などに見られる。
*3 大陸・国は女性として表現され、国民はその娘たちという表現がなされることがある。
*4 tellは古語で「数えあげる」という意味もある。

エルサレムはユダヤ・キリスト・イスラム教の聖地。詩編には神の都エルサレムを賛美し、都に詣でる歓びを歌ったものが多くある。また新約聖書のヨハネの黙示録などから、この世のものではないユートピア、神聖な天国の都市というイメージもある。
ただし、英国人の場合は自分の国が一番エルサレムだと思っているフシがある。
